A random act of kindness is a selfless act performed by a person or people wishing to either assist or cheer up an individual. The phrase was coined by Anne Herbert, who claims to have written “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty” on a place mat at a Sausalito restaurant in 1982.
I was first introduced to it by Oprah Winfrey when she paid the toll for the person behind her on a bridge. Now whenever I am on a toll road or bridge, I too will pay the toll for another person. It gives me great joy to perform an act of kindness to a stranger without any expectation of recognition, or thank you.
